The Comic
ERRANT STORY is a graphic novel by Michael Poe, running online since 2002. It is a tongue-in-cheek fantasy adventure set in a world of hired guns, ninja time mages, and genocidal elves, with the occasional sarcastic flying cat thrown in for good measure. It takes a humorous look at everything from the cliches of fantasy storytelling to topics of race, culture, technology, and religion... and invites you to do the same.
ERRANT STORY is planned to run to nine volumes in print, and we're currently in Volume Six online, with more than 700 pages completed so far. New pages are updated regularly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and the comic is currently undergoing a massive revision for print publication. However, the original Volumes One and Two are still available in dead tree format from our online store.
The Story
As the one and only teenaged half elf in her entire country, Meji Hinadori is pretty sure her life sucks. She can't seem to make any friends her own age, her grades at mage school are a flaming wreck (literally!), and it looks like her last hope to even salvage her inheritance requires acing some impossibly amazing senior project... like, say, becoming an insane demigoddess and taking over the world. That shouldn't be too hard, right?
Unfortunately, Meji's misguided quest for power takes her straight into the middle of an ancient race war, and now it seems the whole world wants her dead. Meji is left with few good choices, and now between rescuing a manfully brooding assassin, trying to seduce her disgustingly honorable boyfriend, eluding time ninjas and death squads, bonding with an angsty Elven ranger, and disciplining her sarcastic flying cat, she must somehow find the power she needs to save her life... and her grades.
The Map
It seems that every fantasy story comes with a map these days, and Errant Story is no exception. Here's a rough map of the territory involved in our story:
