ER:Father Dugoy

A minor character in the Errant Road free-form on-line role-playing game. Needless to say, he doesn't exist in the Poe-verse.

Dugoy is head priest of the temple of the Veracian Church in the small town of Mazantzel, somewhere in the boonies of southern Veracia. This town is visited by PCs Argus, Lillith, Sasha, Brother Miguel and Sister Rose as they try to track the fugitive Father Egbert, missing under mysterious circumstances from the mission in Kiyoka. Since Rose and Miguel are members of the Reformed branch of the Veracian Church, and the others aren't associated with the Veracian Church at all, they don't necessarily expect a warm welcome in Mazantzel, which like most small Veracian towns is dominated by the Orthodox branch of the church. However, they really aren't ready for the reception Dugoy and some friends give them, with lances raised, swords drawn, and so on. Fortunately, this encounter happens during the Festival of Departure, so that Dugoy can't add magical attack to the old-fashioned stuff with weaponry.

When Dugoy is deserted by the mob of yahoos he was riding with, Lillith subdues him quickly and painfully, whereupon some inconvenient truths begin to emerge: this whole "welcoming committee" is a racket designed to separate unwitting travelers from their pocketbooks, and possibly more. The group sends Dugoy back to town with his tail between his legs (and the other stuff between his legs rather ... painful owing to Lillith's approach to subduing him) and gives the town a pass. However, they later report on his racketeering to the Cardinal Inquisitor, who is thought unlikely to tolerate such behavior. Dugoy could therefore be in even more of a world of hurts than what Lillith left him with, which was considerable. He probably won't reappear in the story, and it's just as well.
