Second-lowest rank among members of the Ensigerum, above Initiate but below full Monk status. The most important novice so far is Sara Amraphel, whose promotion to full monk hinged on completion of a certain assassination gig. It didn't go well.

It has been implied that the mortality among novices en route to Monk is substantial.
