Templates and Categories

The instruction to put Categories at the beginning of the page, in Templates, isn't really practical, because most articles belong in multiple Categories. I've kluged a modification to the text, but a better solution needs to be found. -- Graybeard 23:56, 27 January 2007 (CST)

Well additional categories can always be added in the body. Hmmm, let's see if I can give you read-only to my current story background wiki. I have mutiple cats and it works fine with various templates tagging the various pages as needed. But then, that's more of a programmer's approach. :) Slamlander 02:14, 28 January 2007 (CST)

Does anyone else think that the current format of "Poe Notes" is amazingly, incredibly ugly? At least the other method was easy to understand... and allows for interesting notes from people other than Poe... --Kestenvarn 19:00, 30 May 2007 (CDT)

Yes, it could be improved. Play with the template, why don't you? FTR, we have a mechanism that allows non-cannonical notes from others. We are of multiple minds as to the value. In a way, that's what the forums are for. We do try somewhat to keep the wiki cannonical.
If you really look at the way templates work, in this version of the wiki software, you will quickly realise that there are some limits to what we can do. Your proposal would cost us many indexing abilities that have currently proven themselves useful. We have to keep track of this shit too. --Slamlander 01:51, 31 May 2007 (CDT)

Images

Now that we have the capability to upload images, let's proceed carefully in developing guidelines about exactly what and how. I don't understand the rationale for expanding images to a minimum of 300 pixels; it's producing poor image quality in some cases. The restriction as to file types also should be discussed. I understand the justification for sticking with the most accessible types, but it may cut into the availability of things on the main site for download, as the file formats of the comics themselves, not to mention the wallpapers, has changed as Errant Story has matured. Let's try to get some consensus here. -- Graybeard 09:03, 10 October 2008 (CDT)

The resolution doesn't drop that much and it can be brought back with Sharpening (PaintShopPro XI). The templates can resize to smaller images but they can't increase. I suggest 300px(minimum) to let us resize the template boxen to a reasonable size without exceeding the available image. Most of my Face Char 1.jpg were built exactly that way. Mostly, with various degrees of upsizing. --Slamlander 10:47, 10 October 2008 (CDT)
See the Evelyn Samael article for an illustration of why I don't think this is a good idea. (You may have to look at an earlier version of the thing; I'm going to try to replace the cruddy image there with something better. The version as of 10 October, 23:43, contains the offending image.) -- Graybeard 18:48, 10 October 2008 (CDT)
Counter argument is Sarine Elle, unless you don't think that the image is of sufficient quality. --Slamlander 01:51, 11 October 2008 (CDT)
The difference is that that shot of Sarine (which btw isn't the primary one I'd use to illustrate her character, but that's a different subject) was already quite large as it appeared in the original panel, so it didn't have to be magnified much. Most of the "minor" characters don't have mug shots in the comic that are large enough to stand magnification to this size without losing something. Possibly the right guidance is "300px for major characters, 150px for minor ones" or something like that. -- Graybeard 16:11, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
