Saturday Filler Infodump: Veracia Part One

Veracia was a bit smaller in the early history of Errant Story. Sandwiched between the Kingdom of Lorenzel and the Aristocracy of Delphiniel, the theocracy survived and gained power mainly due to its unique resource, the priests of the Church of Luminosita.

In those days there were few proper mages around, and what few there were consisted mainly of short tempered old men secluded in towers, and crazy women living out in the swamp. On the other hand, the Church was orderly, reasonably clean, and safe. When faced with the challenge of finding help for a feverish child, even people who didn’t follow Luminosita would choose the church over wandering out into the wilds looking for some old witch who was as likely to turn you into a frog as she was to help you. This gave the Veracian Church quite a lot of influence and power over the other nations of the world. By roughly 500 years before the events of Errant Story, they had gained millions of worshipers in every country in that part of the world.

At that time, the northern nation of Delphiniel was invaded by a mass army of Trolls, a size of force which has never been seen before or since. The trolls were led by a cunning young cheiftess named Mikota, who had somehow convinced hundreds of tribes to put aside their old ways and unite against the humans.  Delphiniel was completely unprepared for such a force and was quickly overwhelmed.

Fearing that the troll army would turn southward, Veracia quickly sent aid and reinforcements to Delphiniel, even going so far as to unveil their new weapon for the first time:  Luminosita himself.   After a messy series of battles, Mikota was killed.  Without her guidance, the troll clans broke up and scattered, and Veracia’s armies were able to push them back into mountains.

The trolls were stopped, but Delphiniel was in ruins.   Veracia offered more aid and helped rebuild the country, so much so that Veracia was able to quietly and swiftly annex the entire country in return for their assistance.  This move actually met with very little resistance, as Delphiniel’s government and nobility were in tatters, over three fourths of the nation were already followers of the church of Luminosita, and Veracia had just saved the lives of millions.  What few dissidents there were eventually fled Delphiniel, and headed north into what would later become known as the Northern Confederacy.

The takeover was successful, and Veracia’s golden age began.   Soon after, Veracia would discover something in the mountains of Delphiniel that would help expand their powerbase even further…
