Lowest rank of members of the Ensigerum; first mentioned here. Imperatrix Anita (who seems to specialize in sneers, insults and putdowns) thinks it would be a good idea to bust some of the monks back to this rank so that they can re-learn some martial skills. It has been implied that the mortality rate among Initiates en route to the next higher rank of Novice is nothing to sneeze at.
