In context, an edged weapon. The humans of the story tend not to carry them, preferring either swords or (in the case of the NPC Guards protecting the Heretic Knowledge Vault) pole arms. It's more popular with gods, apparently; Luminosita wields a great huge honker of an axe when he is summoned (with disastrous results) to wage battle with the enhanced Ian, and in the bizarre battleground inside Ian's mind, Anilis is similarly equipped. Of course, he may simply be having a blood-loss-induced nightmare that takes him back to the battle with Luminosita ... or not.
